Body Found In Search For Missing Briton In Malaysia
A body has been found in the hunt for missing British man Gareth Huntley, who was on Malaysia's Tioman Island on a sabbatical from his job in the City.
Although the body appeared less than 100m away from the conservation camp of the Juara Turtle project where the 34-year-old was living and working as a volunteer, it is to early to confirm if the body is that of the missing Briton, Deputy Superintendent Johari Yahaya told the Malaysian newspaper The Star.
According to reports, search personnel stumbled across the corpse in a pond close to a kayak storage unit at around 12pm local time.
The 34-year-old, originally from West Yorkshire, set off on May 27 to find a waterfall some four miles away from the camp in the jungles of the island, telling his friends he would be back by 2pm but he failed and a search was launched.
In the later days and following the initial criticism of the Malaysian authorities' response, more than 100 people were involved in the search, including dozens of rescue personnel backed by paramilitary commandos, multiple helicopters, speedboats ans sniffer dogs.
Mr Huntley's mother, Janet Southwell, and his girlfriend, Kit Natariga, are on the island and the Foreign Office said consular staff on the ground "continue to provide support to the family of Gareth Huntley at this very difficult time."
