Police Failings Over Discrimination Allegations
A report from the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has found significant failings in the handling of discrimination allegations made by the public in three English police forces.
The IPCC said the complaints, which were most of racial discrimination, were "poorly handled" from beginning to end and that complains about the officers by the public were often not believed.
Although 94 of the 170 complaints examined by the IPCC were investigated, none of them where supported.
However, when the discrimination allegations were from their police colleges half of them were investigated.
The three forces only supported between 11% and 13% of the complaints from the public and many were resolved locally without a formal investigation.
West Yorkside Deputy Chief Constable Dee Collins said they are "very disappointed with the suggestion that we are 'failing at every stage'" but recognised that "some improvements" are needed.
Greater Manchester's Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd said: "This is a hard-hitting report, but I welcome it because it is vital that there's confidence in the process."
