Hundreds Evacuated From London Skyscraper After Fire Alert
Nearly 900 people have been evacuated from London skyscraper The Shard, the tallest in Western Europe, after smoke was discovered in the basement at 10:30.
Seven fire engines and 50 firefighters were dispatched to the 1,004 ft-high building following reports of smoke at the London landmark. They erected a 50-metre cordon while they leaded a mass evacuation of about 900 people.
According to the London Fire Brigade (LFB), they could not find any fire in the building and are now investigating what caused the smoke. No injuries have been reported.
A tweet from @TheShardLondon said: "Emergency services are responding to a fire alarm at The Shard. Evacuation procedures have been followed and we are ready to assist as needed."

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Warehouse Fire Investigated
An investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire at a warehouse in Deptford on Thursday. London Fire Brigade were called to reports of a fire at an industrial unit at a business park on Trundleys Road. Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters were on site at the height of the blaze.

A group of leading surgeons and medical experts have called for a nationwide ban on smoking in public places, in a letter sent to the Times Newspaper. The UK’s medical Royal Colleges and their Faculties stated in the letter that "the time has come for legislation to make public places smoke free".
