Scrap Old Polluting Cars To Save Lives, Says Motoring Charity

Motoring charity RAC Foundation has called on the Government to introduce a scrappage scheme that would see owners of older diesel cars given incentives to scrap the vehicles.

The charity say that getting the cars off the roads would improve air quality and save some of the 30,000 people believed killed each year by the dirty air.

The charity argued minister should consider introducing a new scheme for vehicles that emit high levels of particulate matter and nitrogen oxide with both linked to lung cancer, asthma, diabetes and heart problems.

According to the RAC report estimations, the poor air quality in the UK is reducing life expectancy at birth by six months and that the issue would have a bigger impact in England and Wales than eliminating all road deaths or the passive smoking deaths.

McCanns Encouraged By New Search

Kate and Gerry McCann have said on their official Facebook account that they are "encouraged by the progress" being made by Portuguese and British police officers involved in the new search for their daughter Madeleine.

The McCann's wrote on the Official Find Madeleine Campaign Facebook page: "We are kept updated on the ongoing work in Portugal and are encouraged by the progress.

"Thank you for continuing to stand by us and supporting our efforts to get Madeleine home."

Officers had planned to search the large area until Friday but they have asked authorities in Portugal for an extra week, while they continue working with a ground-penetrating radar, sniffer dogs and searching inside drains and manhole covers with mini cameras.

Parents Arrest Over Obese Child

A couple from King's Lynn in Norfolk have been arrested on suspicion of cruelty and neglect of their obese child.

The 49-year-old man and 44-year-old woman were arrested in March on suspicion of child neglect and cruelty under section 1 of the Children's Act 1933.

They were questioned by officers over the child's care and later released on bail.

A spokeswoman said the police were working with health and social services and that an intervention at this level was "very rare" and only occurred where other attempts to protect the child had been unsuccessful.

She said: "Our priority will always be the health, well-being and safety of Norfolk's children and we will always do all we can to support families to meet their children's needs."
