Light And Smoke Reports Spark Aircraft Search
A police helicopter and ground search teams are investigating an area near Minehead in the north of Somerset after reports of a bright and smoking light in the sky and members of the public seeing an aircraft coming down on Sunday evening.
Both Avon and Somerset Police have recognised "numerous other calls from people" reporting a "smoking light that was seen to fall to ground."
Officers say they are "confident" it was not a crashing aircraft, while Air Traffic Control said there was no aircraft in the area at the time of distress calls.
Police and Exmoor search and rescue teams searching the area and nearby open ground have not found anything.
Veteran's Medals Stolen On D-Day Anniversary
A 92-year-old war veteran in north London has had his eleven war medals stolen on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings after answering his door to a bogus caller claiming to be from the water board.
The burglar left the house a short time later, after apparently checking the taps of the kitchen.
That evening the veteran noticed some items in his bedroom had been moved and his war medals were gone.
The man was described by the veteran, who served with the Grenadier Guards, as about 5ft 10in tall and of stocky build.
Three Soldiers Died From Overheating In SAS Exercise
Three soldiers from Bath who died during a training exercise on the Brecon Beacons in Powys last year died from overheating, it has been confirmed.
L/Cpl Craig Roberts, 24, of Conwy, L/Cpl Edward Maher, 31 and Cpl James Dunsby died last year following an SAS training exercise.
Mr Roberts and Mr Maher died from hyperthermia on 13 July while Mr Dunsby died in the hospital two weeks later.
The soldiers were among six men rescued from the mountain during an exercise as part of a four-week trial of the Territorial Army's SAS reservists.
Mr Dunsby's death was also due multi-organ failure following a 40-mile hike in 29.5 degrees.
In November the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) ordered the Ministry of Defence to take action to deal with the risks associated with training following the men's deaths. A decision on whether to pursue manslaughter prosecutions as a result of their deaths is expected this month.
