JK Rowling Donates £1m To Back Scotland In UK

The author of the Harry Potter books JK Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh, has made a £1m donation to help fund the Better Together campaign against Scottish independence and has revealed her views and explained her decision in a long post in her website.

Mrs Rowling, who said she loves Scotland, explained she had written after listening to months of arguments and counter-arguments.

The author wrote that she accepted she might not be Scottish enough to have a valid view in some extreme nationalists' eyes but insisted: "I've lived in Scotland for 21 years and plan to remain here for the rest of my life. By residence, marriage, and out of gratitude for what this country has given me, my allegiance is wholly to Scotland."

The Gloucestershire-borne writer said: "The simple truth is that Scotland is subject to the same 21st century pressures as the rest of the world. It must compete in the same global markets, defend itself from the same threats and navigate what still feels like a fragile economic recovery."

The author also explained she wanted to write about her decision and her donation because she "always prefer to explain in my own words why I am supporting a cause."

Her large donation was topped by lottery winners Colin and Chris Weir who donated £3.5m to the pro-independence cause.

They won £161m on EuroMillions in 2011 and have also set up a charitable trust.
