Elena Baltacha 'Never Complained About Her Disease'
Nino Severino, husband and former trainer of Elena Baltacha, who died in May of liver cancer at the age of 30, has praised his wife's “incredible strength" during her treatment and has said she never complained about her disease.
Severino, who said his wife showed her fighting spirit until the end, added: "In all the time I spent with Bally, this is what really showed what a person she was."
Wimbledon champion Andy Murray was among a number of tennis stars who played a charity fundraiser in memory of Baltacha on Sunday.
Severino and Baltacha got married shortly before her diagnosis but he explained that she was “ill for quite long time" but “medical people couldn't understand why" because the symptoms she was showing didn't seem to indicate anything with the liver."
He explained: "She had this really, really bad cough and then it was in January she got a pain in her side and that's when we found out."
Severino described his wife's battle against her illness and said he “literally spent every second with Bal fighting all the way," adding: "I loved her, more than anything and she felt the same. We were just utterly devoted to each other, utterly."
