Body of British student recovered in Italian Alps
The body of a British student who drowned during a school trip to Italy has been recovered.
Alex Foulkes (17) from Harrogate Grammar School, North Yorkshire, had been taking part in a class expedition along the foothills of the Italian Alps on Monday, when he fell into a fast-flowing river. A day-long search by helicopter and mountain rescue teams failed to spot the schoolboy and hopes soon faded of finding him alive.
The search resumed on Tuesday morning, when an Alpine rescue team located the student's body.
The tragedy happened in the Valgrisenche region of Italy, near the French border. It is thought that the current heatwave has raised river levels in the area, due to snow melting along the mountain peaks.
