Parliament To Fast Track New Emergency Data Access Powers

Parliament is to rush through emergency powers to allow police and security services to access phone and internet records, a move being backed by all three main political parties.

The Prime Minister has said that "urgent action" is needed "to protect the public after the European Court of Justice struck down existing surveillance powers."

The emergency powers have been defended by the PM and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, who said that it was not about introducing new snooping laws but about maintaining existing capabilities.

However, opponents of the move, including civil liberties campaigners, have warned that the new powers will be used to invade people\s privacy.
