Biggest UK Cities Unlikely To Reach Air Quality Targets Before 2030
Some of the UK's biggest cities are unlikely to meet the EU target for air quality before 2030, the government has said.
2010 had been set as the target for EU member states to reduce pollutants from diesel cars and trucks – the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) they produce is linked to a range of respiratory ailments.
However, the government has told the European Court of Justice that London, Leeds and Birmingham could still be above these goals in 2030.
The information was revealed as part of a civil case that has been brought by Client Earth, an air quality activist group. The group has previously won a Supreme Court judgement against the government for breaching its legal duty of NO2.
