Staffing Guidelines Issued To Hospitals
Strict guidelines are to be issued to hospitals in England on safe staffing levels, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has announced.
The guidelines stop short of setting a minimum for safe staff levels, but advise that "having more than eight patients to one nurse on a ward in the day should act as a trigger for checking if care was being compromised."
This is one of a number of 'red flag events' that the guidelines say should "prompt concern".
Others include patients not being helped to the bathroom and patients not receiving medications.
These events can be flagged by both nurses and patients, with the incident then being investigated.
