Public Asked To Help Count UK's Insects
The public has been asked for its help in surveying Briton's insects.
From the 19 July the Butterfly Conservation charity is calling on the public to spend 15 minutes a day sitting in "a sunny spot" and counting how many of the 21 most common species of insects they spot.
It is understood that these insects are the most visible indicator of the health of the countryside.
This year marks the fifth time the charity has carried out its insect survey.
Heatwave Alert Issued By Met Office
More than 3,000 lightning strikes were recorded in less than two hours on Thursday night, BBC Weather have reported.
The storms hit southern England overnight and are expected to move north across the UK today (Friday).
Despite the storms a heatwave alert has been issued by the Met Office for Southern England and the Midlands.
Prince William Unveils Captain Flinders Memorial
A statue has been unveiled dedicated to Captian Matthew Flinders, an explorer credited with being the first person to circumnavigate, and name, Australia.
The Duke of Cambridge unveiled the bronze memorial at Australia House in central London, saying that Captain Flinders "did far more than anyone to place Australia - quite literally - on the map".

PM unveils nuclear weapons plans
Prime Minister Tony Blair has told the Commons that the UK's current Trident missile system will have to be replaced. Speaking to the House of Commons, Mr Blair said that the decision to maintain the government's independent nuclear power deterrent was "fully consistent with all our international obligations".

Kelly unveils £164m plan to tackle youth homelessness
Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly has announced a £164 million plan, which aims to tackle homelessness among young people. Mrs Kelly pledged to donate £74 million to support a series of schemes in 2007/2008 to provide supported lodgings for young people who cannot stay in the family home.

Government unveils counter-terrorism centre
The government has unveiled a new centre designed to lead the Ministry of Defence's scientific response to terrorist threats. The Counter-Terrorism Science and Technology Centre will co-ordinate MoD's technical response to terrorist incidents such as last year's attacks on London and the threats the Armed Forces face in areas of conflict overseas.
