Deputy Leader Of Powys Council Resigns Over Use Of N-word
The deputy leader of Powys council, Myfanwy Alexander, has resigned from her position over her use of the N-word in a council meeting last month.
Ms Alexander had used the word in July during a council debate on cross-border health services. She was quoted by the Shropshire Star as saying: "We are treated like n****** over the border."
The deputy leader had previously refused to resign but did issue an apology for her use of the "careless word", but claims that increasing pressure had pushed her to take the decision.
In her resignation letter she wrote: "I am not a racist and I believe that by resigning, I am accepting a slur on my character which is entirely untrue.
"My resignation has not been tendered without pressure and I would have expected to encounter more loyalty.
"It is, alas, a situation which has to be resolved and you are of the opinion that I should resign."
It is understood that Ms Alexander will remain a county councillor for the Banwy ward.
