Eastbourne Pier Promenade To Be Open For Airshow

Eatbourne Council has said that a path running under their historic pier, recently damaged in a fire, will be reopened in time for the town's annual airshow.

Structural engineers are understood to have ruled that the promenade that runs beneath the damaged pier, remains in good condition and is safe to use.

"The news will be welcomed by visitors to one of the largest and most popular free air shows in the south," a council spokeswoman said.

Mo Farah Treated In Hospital After Collapsing After Training Run

Athlete Mo Farah had to be airlifted to hospital after collapsing during a training run.

The Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, who is due to compete at this week's European Championships in Zurich, revealed it was this incident that caused him to miss the Commonwealth Games.

It is understood that Mr Farah had suffered an infection after having a tooth removed and collapsed at the end of a training run. The 31-year-old athlete was treated in hospital for four days.

Inquest Begins Into British Walkers Death On Greek Island

An inquest is underway into the death of 73-year-old Arthur Jones, who died while on a walking holiday on the island of Crete.

It is understood that the Denbigh pensioner, a former soldier and experienced walker, was missing for six weeks before his body was found under a tree in a remote area last Sunday.

Two people die in flooding accident
Two men have died as they attempted to clear flood water from a flooded rugby club in Gloucestershire. It is thought that the two men, reported to be a father and son, were using a petrol-powered pump to clear water from the cellar of Tewkesbury Rugby Club and may have been overcome by petrol fumes.

Catering firm and union reach deal
In-flight catering firm Gate Gourmet and the Transport and General Workers Union have announced a provisional deal that looks likely to bring the long running dispute to an end. While no details have yet been released the deal will be put to staff on Wednesday.

Taiwanese President and running mate shot on eve of elections
The Taiwan President and Vice-President have been shot just hours before the country was due to go to the polls. President Chen Shui-bain was wounded in the stomach and his running mate Vice-President Annette Hsiu-lien Lu was hit in the right knee when a number of shots were fired at their motorcade as it passed through the southern city of Tainan.

Reid gives 'green light' for £4bn PFI hospital deal
The 'green light' has been given for 15 new NHS hospital developments in a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) deal worth more than £4 billion, it has been announced today. Today's announcement will bring investment in new NHS hospitals to more than £16 billion since 1997, the health department said.

Ed Balls Fined For Running Red Light
Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls has been fined for running a red light in his car. A spokesperson for the Labour MP confirmed a report in The Sun, saying the incident happened after Mr Balls left Parliament last December. The politician was driving on the Embankment, central London, following a late-night Commons sitting.
