Almost 400 Jobs Cut At Newport Bakery

Almost 400 jobs are to be lost at a bakery in Newport.

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers (BFAW) union announced that 390 jobs are to be cut at the Avana bakery in Rogerstone, Newport by November.

They say staff were informed of the cuts at lunchtime on Wednesday.

The news comes two weeks after the bakery's owners, 2 Sisters Group, sold the business to Food Utopia.

Premier Foods To Shut Down Two Bakery Sites
Premier Foods has announced it will be closing two bakery sites which will result in axing 900 jobs. The firm, which makes Hovis, said its sites in Greenford and Birmingham will be closing some time next year, in addition to the previously announced closure of the Eastleigh bakery.

Coach Overturns On M1
A National Express coach has overturned on the M1 in Buckinghamshire. It is understood that the coach overturned at a service station near Newport Pagnell just after 4pm on Monday. According to reports, a number of people have been injured and fire crews are cutting the coach driver free. Four ambulances are currently at the scene.

Driver Arrested Over Coach Crash
Police are to question the driver of a coach, which overturned on the M1 in Buckinghamshire on Monday, on suspicion of drink driving. Thirty people were injured in the crash, which happened around 4pm on Monday, and six, including the driver, were seriously injured.

Judge Rules Ashers Bakery Guilty Of Discrimination
A judge has found a Christian-run bakery guilty of discrimination over its refusal to make a cake with a slogan supporting gay marriage. Ashers Baking Company was asked by Gareth Lee to make a cake with Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie with a motto in support of gay marriage.
