Flights Resume At Luton Airport

Flights in and out of London Luton Airport have returned to normal following a security alert yesterday (8 September).

At around 2pm on Monday, passengers were evacuated from the airport following the discovery of a suspicious object discovered in a passenger's hand luggage. The airport was closed for around three hours, with 46 commercial flights being cancelled and a further 18 being diverted.

In a statement, Luton Airport said the item was found contained within a passenger's hand luggage during a routine x-ray security search.

It added: "Under questioning by the police, the passenger was unable to account for the item and confirmed the bag had previously been left unattended.

"The item, which was rectangular in shape displayed a large amount of organic mass, power sources and several electronic cables, was effectively neutralised and taken away by Bedfordshire Police for further examination."

Both the airport and the police have said they did not know what the object was. No arrests have been made in relation to the incident.
