Churchill Paintings Offered In Lieu Of Inheritance Tax
The family of Sir Winston Churchill have offered 38 paintings done by Sir Winston himself, in lieu of inheritance tax.
The paintings, which have always remained within the Churchill family, are currently on loan to Chartwell, the Churchill family home.
It is understood that Sir Winston's daughter, Lady Mary Soames, who died in May, had requested in her will that the paintings remain at Chartwell.
However, the family have offered the paintings, which have been described as "a national treasure of major historical and artistic importance", in lieu of inheritance tax.
The government is expected to make a decision on the offer next year.
