Met Office Opens Space Weather Centre
The Met Office has officially opened a new forecast centre in Exeter dedicated to space weather.
It is hoped that the Space Weather Operations Centre will help protect the UK's economy and infrastructure from severe events caused by space weather.
It is claimed that the worst "storms" have the power to disturb satellites, power grids and radio communications.
The National Risk Register now lists solar storms as amongst the most serious threats, with the potential to cause major economic upheaval, and the government has ordered contingencies be put in place to help protect the UK.
