School and hospital anti-crime scheme launched
A £4.6 million crime reduction scheme to make students, patients and staff safer in schools and hospitals was announced today.
Two schools - in Sutton Coldfield and Darlington - and two hospitals - in Birmingham and Kent, along with East Midlands Ambulance Service - were chosen because they faced problems such as violence against staff, criminal damage, theft and attempted arson.
The pilot scheme focuses on practical measures such as door locks opened by swipe cards or PIN numbers, panic alarms, improved lighting and fencing, and CCTV systems that will deter criminals and assist security staff. East Midlands ambulance crews will also receive alarms for portable equipment and personal protective equipment.
Hazel Blears, Home Office Minister for crime reduction, said: "Teachers, nurses, doctors and paramedics are among the most public spirited people in the country - crimes against them, as they go about their vital day-to-day work, are completely unacceptable. They have a right to work in a safe and secure environment where they can teach children or treat patients who are also entitled to be protected."
The schools are expected to install their crime reduction equipment in September and the hospitals in December. Each project will be evaluated continuously following the installation of equipment.

Survey reveals falling level of some crimes
The overall crime rate in England and Wales is continuing to fall, according to the results of the British Crime Survey (BCS). The survey showed that the overall crime rate fell by 11%, in the year ending September 2004.

Boy Arrests School Burglar
Police in south Wales have praised the actions of a 16-year-old boy who apprehended the suspect for a burglary at a local primary school. Brynhyfryd Primary School in Briton Ferry was burgled late on Monday night which resulted in computer equipment being stolen.
