Unite Union Warn Rolls-Royce Against Compulsory Redundancies
Following the announcement on Tuesday that a total of 2,600 jobs are to be cut at Rolls-Royce, Unite the union has issued a warning, saying that the firm will have to "work hard to justify" the job losses.
The union said: "They must be clear with us we won't be seeing people sacked and then consultants and agency workers coming in to fill the gaps left behind."
In response the company has said that it will "work hard to achieve reductions by voluntary means".

Plans Announced To Make Young People Work For Benefits
The Prime Minister has announced a proposal for 18 to 21-year-olds claiming benefits to do daily work experience. The proposed reform, known as Community Work Programme, would see young people not in work, education or training, required to complete daily work experience, alongside continuing to look for work in order to qualify for benefits.

Alice Gross Police Appeal For Missing 41-Year-Old Builder
Police investigating the disappearance of 14-year-old Alice Gross have issued an appeal for information on the whereabouts of 41-year-old Arnis Zalkalns. Police say that Mr Zalkalns, a builder from Ealing, west London, has not been seen since 03 September.

Proposed changes to the age of retirement in the UK have been savaged by a leading trade union. Construction union UCATT have reacted with disgust to the announcement that the retirement age is set to be increased to 66 by 2016 with the expectation it will soon be increased to 70.

Rail Strike Called Off
Network Rail has won a High Court challenge against planned strikes by RMT union members nationwide. The court granted an injunction after Network Rail alleged RMT's ballot of workers had presented discrepancies. It means a four-day strike, due to start next Tuesday, will not go ahead.
