Bids invited for £4m anti-arson project
The government is inviting bids for £4 million for projects aimed at tackling the growing menace of arson.
Successful bids are likely to range from schemes to clear abandoned and derelict vehicles from the streets before they're torched - that have proved effective elsewhere in the country - to new and innovative ways to clamp down on the problem.
Today's announcement - which is part of the Arson Control Forum Implementation Fund - comes from the government's £43 million three-year investment for fire prevention work in England and Wales.
Fire Safety Minister, Phil Hope, said: "Arson is the largest single cause of major fires in the UK and can destroy lives and cost millions of pounds in damage to property. As our recent Fire White Paper highlighted, arson control is a key element of our fire and rescue service modernisation agenda - with a greater emphasis on fire prevention.
"With this latest round of bids we must aim to build on the success of existing projects already established across the country, such as car clearance schemes and arson task forces, and take forward the fight against arson."
Some of the Arson Control Forum's budget of approximately £13 million over the three-year period from April 2003 will fund research into the causes and prevention of arson; most will be used to fund local anti-arson projects and partnerships consisting of the fire & rescue service, police and other local groups.
