Council Votes To Outsource All Services
Northamptonshire County Council has voted to accept plans to outsource all services and move the majority of its staff to new bodies.
The council is seeking to save £68 million by outsourcing all services, including the fire service, waste management and promotion of the county's economy.
All but 150 of the councils 4,000 staff will be reassigned to four new bodies.
The new bodies will cover child protection, care of vulnerable adults, providing health and well-being services and improving the county.
The plan is being called the "Next Generation Model", with the councils remaining 150 staff focusing on "specialist social enterprises".

A £5million package of measures is being rolled out to help improve services for children and young people with communication problems. A new Communication Champion is also being recruited to raise the profile of these issues, Children's Secretary, Ed Balls and Care Services Minister Phil Hope announced today.

Salford Council Staff Propose Taking Over Adult Social Services
Council staff in Greater Manchester have proposed forming their own not-for-profit company in order to run Salford City Council's adult social care. The cabinet is set to decide later today if the 400 staff who currently run the services for the council, can transfer to an independent not-for-profit company.

Mother Who Let Baby Burn Is Jailed
A mother has been jailed for more than two years after her 13-month-old son's charred body was found strapped in his buggy in front of a fire. Tracey Sutherland's confession that she neglected her son, Alexander, between October 29 and November 10 last year, was accepted by Judge Clement Goldstone QC.

Welsh Councils Urged To Consider Voluntary Mergers
Councils across Wales have been urged to consider a voluntary merger, rather than being forced to. It follows a recommendation from the Williams Commission that the number of local councils be reduced from 22 to 10. It has been suggested that councils leading their own mergers would allow them to "shape their own reforms".
