Farage Claims Race Law Comments 'Wilfully Misinterpreted'
UKIP leader Nigel Farage said that comments he made about race laws have been "wilfully misinterpreted".
It is understood that in a Channel 4 documentary, due to be aired next week, Mr Farage is alleged to have said that UKIP would seek to "scrap much of the legislation" currently in place to prevent racial discrimination in the workplace.
Mr Farage appeared on the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, where he said his comments had been "wilfully misinterpreted".
Mr Farage claims he was referring to nationality and not race. He said that his comments were in relation to employers being allowed to discriminate in favour of British workers.
"I did not mention race at all," Mr Farage said. "There was no part of that interview which I ever said it at all.
"What I said was that I do believe there should be a presumption for British employers in favour of them employing British people as opposed to somebody from Poland. That is exactly what I said," he added.
The makers of the Channel 4 programme however, denied that Mr Farage has been "misinterpreted". It is understood they have said that Mr Farage was asked a direct question on "whether there would be a law against discrimination on the grounds of race or colour and he replied no".
