Economic Affairs Committee Claim Govt Case For HS2 'Still To Be Proven'
The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee has said that the government has "no convincing case for the spending £50bn on the HS2 rail link".
The committee said that the government's main argument's of increased rail capacity and rebalancing of the economy, were "still to be proven".
"The Government have not carried out a proper assessment of whether alternative ways of increasing capacity are more cost-effective than HS2," Lord Hollick, chairman of the Lords' committee
"In terms of rebalancing, London is likely to be the main beneficiary from HS2. Investment in improving rail links in the North of England might deliver much greater economic benefit at a fraction of the cost."
The committee has produced a series of questions for the Department of Transport, which it has urged them to address.

NAO "Unclear" On Benefits of HS2 Project
With an estimated funding gap of £3.3bn, the National Audit Office (NAO) has warned that the economic benefits of the HS2 high-speed rail project are unclear. According to the BBC a report from the NAO highlights its “reservations” about growth and jobs being created by the proposed high-speed rail link.

Legal Action Taken Over Cumbrian Rail Crash
It has been revealed that Network rail is to be prosecuted over the Cumbrian rail crash back in 2007, which claimed one life. The rail regulation body, The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) has said that they have started legal proceedings against Network Rail for a breach of health and safety law.

Supreme Court Rejects Final HS2 Legal Challenge
A legal bid calling for more scrutiny of the government's plans for the HS2 national high-speed rail link has been rejected by the Supreme Court. The court unanimously rejected the challenged, which had questioned whether the government had followed the rules on environmental impact when assessing the plans for HS2.
