Five People Arrested Over Fraudulent Unicef Fundraising
Five people have been arrested in connection with fraudulent funding raising in Cardiff.
Three women and two men have been charged with fraud by false representation.
Maria Rodu, 18, Roxanna Ion, 19, both from Grangetown and Elvira Dumitru, 19, from Wandsworth in London will appear before Cardiff Magistrates on Friday 01 May.
The two men aged 18 and 23, also from Grangetown, who have not been named, have been released on police bail pending further investigations.
Police said that an investigation was launched into cold calls made purporting to be collecting money on behalf of Unicef. However Unicef UK confirmed that no-one in the area has been authorised to fundraise for the charity.
Police have advised the public to be cautious of cold callers raising money for charities, publishing the following advice:
S – Safe. If you give money, would you be worse off for having done it?
C – Credible. Is the person trying to convince you that they are credible without being verified by suitable means of identification?
A – Aggressive. Is the scammer using an aggressive tactic, or language, that implies an immediate response and donation?
M – Motive. Is their motive to take your money?
If the answer is ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, then don’t fall for it. Kindly just tell the person you are not interested.
If you think you have been scammed please contact South Wales Police on 101.
