Police Appeal For Information Following Three Street Robberies
Northumbria Police are appealing for information following three robberies in the Gateshead area on Sunday and Monday.
Police said that an elderly woman was knocked to the ground on Ely Street when a man grabbed her shopping bag at about 10:10 on Monday morning. The woman is being treated in hospital.
The attacker is said to have been wearing a grey anorak and blue jeans.
This was followed by another report of a robbery at 10:30 yesterday morning, when another woman was knocked to the ground on Split Crow Road and cash was stolen.
In a similar incident on Sunday an elderly man was robbed at a cashpoint in Victoria Square between 11:10 and 11:20am.
Acting Chief Inspector Helen Anderson said: "We' re carrying out enquiries into these three robberies and although it is possible they could be linked, at the current time there is nothing to suggest that this is the case.
"We want to hear from any witnesses. We would ask anyone who was in Ely Street or Split Crow Road on Monday morning, or in Victoria Square on Sunday morning to come forward.
"Extra officers will be in the area, both carrying out enquiries and reassuring those who may be concerned."
Any witnesses should contact Northumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
