Four die in Scottish road smash
Four people have died and three have been injured following a road crash in Scotland last night.
Around 9.15pm, a 17-year-old youth was driving a Vauxhall Astra southbound on the A77 - two miles north of Girvan in southern Scotland – when the car collided with a Volkswagen Polo car travelling north.
The 17-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall Astra and his 16-year-old male and 14-year-old female rear seat passengers died at the scene. A 26-year-old male front seat passenger was taken by ambulance to Ayr Hospital where he is presently detained in a "serious but stable condition".
The 59-year-old female driver of the Volkswagen Polo died at the scene. The 75-year-old and 11-year-old female passengers were taken to Ayr Hospital where they are presently detained in a "stable condition".
Ayr police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them on 01292 6640000.

Female Soldier Killed In Blast Died 'A Hero'
The female soldier killed in Afghanistan has been praised as a "hero" by her husband. The soldier, from Cumbria, has been named as Sergeant Sarah Bryant. Cpl Bryant's husband and fellow soldier, Carl, said his wife was "a truly special person who died a hero".

Care Worker Arrested on Suspicion Of Raping Patient
Devon and Cornwall Police have arrested a care worker at an NHS psychiatric unit on suspicion of raping a female patient. According to a report by the BBC, the 50-year-old male suspect is alleged to have raped a patient at the Glenbourne unit, which is part of the Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Man Charged Over Hospital Murder
A man has been charged in connection with the murder of a female patient at a psychiatric hospital in Greater Manchester. The 58-year-old woman was assaulted in a ward at Birch Hill Hospital in Rochdale on Monday evening. She was taken to Rochdale Royal Infirmary, but died later.

Hundreds Of Officers Fail Fitness Test
Hundreds of police officers throughout England and Wales have failed a fitness test that is due to become mandatory later this year, according to interim results submitted to the College of Policing. The figures from 39 forces showed that, out of 30,000 tests, 851 officers, 253 male and 598 female, fell short of the mark.

Heroin and morphine are still the substances most commonly involved in drug poisoning deaths, according to The Office for National Statistics. In 2011 there was a 25 per cent drop in fatalities, with 596 deaths.
