University Of Birmingham Discovers 'Oldest' Koran Fragments

The University of Birmingham has discovered what is believed to be the worlds oldest fragments of the Koran.

Radiocarbon analysis of the Muslim holy text has dated the manuscript to be at least 1,370 years old with 95.4% accuracy, making it among the earliest in existence.

The test was carried out in a laboratory at the University of Oxford.

Susan Worrall, Director of Special Collections at the University of Birmingham said: "The radiocarbon dating has delivered an exciting result, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the earliest written copies of the Qur’an.

"We are thrilled that such an important historical document is here in Birmingham, the most culturally diverse city in the UK."

The manuscript, written in an early form of Arabic script known as Hijazi, had been kept with a collection of other Middle Eastern books and documents.
