Body Recovered In Search For 17-Year-Old
The body of 17-year-old male has been recovered from a canal in Hackney.
It is understood that the teenager entered the water near Lea Bridge Road after running away from police on Wednesday afternoon.
Police had been searching for the teenager after being called to a report of concern for his welfare.
While searching the surrounding area, the teenager was spotted on Hackney Marshes, however, he ran off.
Officers tried to stop the male in order to assist him, but, prior to police officers reaching him, the male entered the canal near to Lea Bridge Road.
A police officer entered the canal in an attempt to rescue him, but the male went under the water.
A search of the canal and surrounding area was conducted by police officers with the assistance of dog units, the police helicopter, the Marine Policing Unit and London Fire Brigade. London Ambulance Service also attended the scene.
At around 17:20hrs, the body of a male was recovered from the water by officers from the Met's Marine Policing Unit. We await a post-mortem examination and formal identification.
The Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) has been informed.
