MPs Back Trade Union Bill
MPs have backed the government's proposed Trade Union Bill by 33 votes at its second reading in the House of Commons on Monday.
Under the new Bill unions would need a minimum of 50% turnout in strike ballots; a minimum of 14 days notice before a strike can be held, up from seven; allow employers to use agency workers during strikes; a £20,000 fine if unions fail to wear an official armband; and to end the "check-off" system for collecting union subs direct from a salary.
The Bill has been strongly criticised by unions and the new leadership of the Labour party, who described it as "draconian and counter-productive".
The Bill will now undergo a 'line-by-line' examination by committee before being presented to the House of Lords, who need to approve it, before a final Commons approval.
