Iron age burial chariot unearthed by motorway excavation
Motorway construction workers have unearthed an ancient burial site considered to be one of the most significant Iron Age finds of its type in Britain.
The burial discovered in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, which is thought to date from around 500BC, contains the remains of an Iron Age chieftain. The burial paraphernalia is similar to that of the Parisii, a tribe not previously thought to have been in that particular area of Britain.
The construction workers also discovered the remains of some 200 cattle - possibly part of the burial feast - and a variety of Iron Age artefacts made of bronze and iron.
The site has since been placed under guard. An emergency dig is underway to recover the remains for museum conservation.
The type of chariot burial found was only bestowed on high-ranking figures in the Parisii tribe and is thought to be around 2,500 years old.
Workers who removed the topsoil as work on the £250 million widening scheme for the trans-Pennine junction of the A1M-M62 discovered the remains.
