Cot death expert to face professional conduct inquiry
The expert witness at the centre of a number of high-profile cases brought against women charged with killing their infants is to face a professional conduct inquiry.
The General Medical Council (GMC), who announced that Professor Sir Roy Meadow would be investigated by a committee, said that if proven the allegations would "raise a question of professional misconduct".
Three cases have led to calls for closer examination of the scientific evidence presented as part of the prosecution cases.
The most recent high-profile cases that Professor Meadow was involved in was the trial of Angela Cannings, the mother cleared last week on charges of murdering her two infant sons. Evidence from Professor Meadow was also presented as part of the prosecution cases brought against mothers Trupti Patel and Sally Clark who were also cleared of similar charges.
The professional conduct inquiry will be held next year. Investigations into the allegations against Professor Meadow are continuing and the GMC has declined further comment on the issue.
