US set to release 500 Iraqi prisoners
More than 500 Iraqis held by the US-led coalition, out of an estimated prisoner population of 10,000, are set to be released over the next few days.
The US administrator for Iraq, Paul Bremer, announced that 100 prisoners will be released tomorrow – another 406 will soon follow.
The move is seen as an attempt by the coalition to win hearts and minds after weeks of rising violence in the country.
Mr Bremer said that those freed will not have been major players in the Ba'athist regime and they will have made an oath renouncing all forms of violence. The detainees must be vouched for by community leaders and will be supervised after release.
"In a gesture to give impetus to those Iraqis who wish to reconcile with their countrymen, the coalition will permit some currently detained offenders to return to their homes and families," Mr Bremer said.
"No person directly involved in the death or serious bodily harm to any human being will be released."
