Pension Credit uptake on the rise, government claims

The number of people receiving the Pension Credit went up by 83,000 last month, according to government figures.

There are now 2.62 million people receiving the Credit, worth on average £11.80 extra each week, the government claimed.

The Pension Credit guarantees everyone aged 60 and over an income of at least £102.10 and £155.80 for couples, rising to £105.45 and £160.95 in April. It also awards people aged 65 and over for some of the savings and income they have put away for their retirement.

Pensions Minister Malcolm Wicks urged pensioners to apply for the Credit, and encouraged relatives and friends to help them.

"It couldn't be easier to apply. The whole process takes just 20 minutes with a phone call to our free-phone application line on 0800 99 1234. We will then send you the completed form and all you have to do is check the details are correct and return it with your signature to us," he said.

Pension Credit applications can be made via the freephone Pension Credit application line on 0800 99 1234. Calls are free except from some mobiles.

There is a textphone service for those who have hearing difficulties on 0800 169 0133. The line is open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday.
