Cleveland Police launches biggest ever swoop on crime
Twenty-three people have been arrested this morning after Cleveland Police launched its biggest ever operation – a swoop on wanted criminals.
Up to 500 officers took part in this morning's raids, during which police search-and-arrest teams carried an "all-out blitz" on wanted offenders in Cleveland's crime hot spots.
The operation is continuing today and more arrests are expected to take place this afternoon, a police spokesperson said. Some of those people arrested will be appearing at court later today.
The operation, codenamed Sabre, is planned to last four days in its initial phase. It began in Middlesbrough but will be rolled out across the constabulary area in the coming days.
The force said that "months of meticulous planning" had gone into identifying "prime targets" for the arrest teams. The targeted offenders have been involved in crime, such as burglary, theft, car crime and drugs, and anti-social behaviour, a spokesperson said.
Mobile prison buses have been put on standby to expand cell capacity and deal with the anticipated "flood" of prisoners who will be fast-tracked to court.
The force's chief constable, Sean Price, said that the move was a planned initiative to "ensure we keep the criminals on the run".
"It should send out the clearest of messages to those who create havoc and fear in our communities that we know who they are and we are coming for them," he added.
"I hope today's operation demonstrates to everyone that we mean business. There will be no let-up on our part to drive down crime and put the law-abiding people of Cleveland first."
The man heading up Operation Sabre, Assistant Chief Constable Adam Briggs, said that the help of the public was "vital" to the continuing success of the operation.
"They [the public] can be our eyes and ears and provide vital intelligence to torpedo that minority which bring misery to the majority of law abiding people," he said.
ACC Briggs added: "Operation Sabre is here to stay. It will be fine-tuned, and used time and time again. Armed with the right intelligence it will cut crime and disorder on our streets."
Cleveland Police will be distributing information leaflet to houses calling for help and support from residents.
