Dixons to close 106 stores in UK
Dixons Group have confirmed that they are to close 106 stores over the next three months, due to disappointing sales.
Around 1000 jobs will be affected by the closure, but Dixons are hoping to move a significant number of the employees to other stores.
Dixons, who also own Curry’s, PC World and The Link, have not commented on which stores will close, but a spokesman for the company said that all the sites were within five miles of another store.
It has been confirmed, however, that two stores in Northern Ireland – in Bangor and Newry – are to close. Thirty jobs will be affected – 24 in Bangor and eight in Newry. However Dixons hopes to redeploy the staff to other stores, including Curry’s. A 90-day consultation period has now begun and the stores are continuing to trade. The branches in Belfast and Londonderry will remain open.
Dixons, who currently have 320 stores in the UK and Ireland, have announced the closures as part of a review of how best to develop Dixons format for the future. The company have also confirmed that tests of new format Dixons stores will continue as part of the profit improvement plan for the chain.
Dixons will take a one-off charge of £48 million to cover the closures.
The company said in a trading update that it was on course to hit full-year profit targets.
The Group are expected to report profits of between £320 million and £330 million. Sales across the group grew by 14% over the year to May 1, including a substantial rise in international sales.
