G8 nations agree closer security cooperation

A meeting of G8 Ministers for justice and home affairs has agreed on new means for greater co-operation and intelligence-sharing to tackle international terrorism, organised crime and corruption.

The G8 group of nations – Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, Russia, UK and US – endorsed recommendations for improved cross-border sharing of intelligence information and greater use of advanced intelligence such as undercover agents. Tackling passport fraud and faster operational action to tackle attacks on computer networks and internet-related crimes (such as child pornography) were also highlighted as areas for cooperation.

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears attended the meeting in Washington on Monday and Tuesday. She said there was a "clear commitment" throughout the G8 member countries to work together to tackle terrorism and international crime.

"Close co-operation is vital if we are to succeed against those people who seek to destroy our freedoms and way of life," she said.

"Intelligence is the key to preventing and prosecuting serious crimes. The measures agreed today will have real benefits as we continually improve the practical ways we work alongside other countries against criminals who will not be stopped by geographical borders."

While in Washington, Ms Blears also had talks with US Secretary for Homeland Security Tom Ridge and met US Attorney General John Ashcroft to discuss ongoing UK/US counter-terrorism efforts.
