London makes five-strong 2012 Olympic shortlist

London has made the shortlist of the cities bidding to host the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012.

The city has been accepted as an official Candidate City, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) med from its offices in Switzerland today.

Madrid, Moscow, New York and Paris will be the UK's rivals when the final 2012 vote is staged by the IOC next year.

Among London's eight original rivals, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Leipzig and Havana failed to survive the shortlisting process.

London 2012 Chairman Barbara Cassani said: "We are thrilled to have made the shortlist, but our hearts go out to the losing bids.

"It is a very special honour to be chosen as a candidate city. We will do everything in our power to justify the IOC's faith in London as a potential host."

Bid Vice Chairman Sebastian Coe added: "The next year-and-a-quarter will be all about hard work.

"All the other countries left in the bid are heavyweights so we will have to focus. I think London is in a very, very strong position. But the technical bid has to be flawless."
