Chelsea signs up for youth learning scheme
Chelsea football club has been signed up for a scheme that uses sport to improve young people's reading, maths and computer skills, the government has announced.
Every FA Premiership club is now involved in the 'Playing for Success' programme, which is celebrating its fifth anniversary today. It focuses on raising standards among pupils at key stages 2 and 3 who may be struggling or are losing motivation.
The programme has helped more than 100,000 nine to 14 year olds so far and research shows that the centres "are making a big difference to underachieving pupils", the government said.
A total of 103 sports clubs - including football, rugby and cricket clubs - are now supporting the scheme. This means the government is way ahead of its target of getting 100 clubs involved by 2006.
The Playing for Success centres are based in or near sports grounds. The facilities can help pupils with their learning, for example by measuring how many people a stadium can hold. Experienced teachers run the centres and each pupil usually spends around 20 hours there over a term.
Funding comes from the government, local education authorities, the sports clubs and local businesses.
