12 Britons charged after clashes with Portuguese police

Twelve Britons are set to appear in a Portuguese court following overnight clashes with riot police in the resort town of Albufeira.

The 12 have been charged with public order offences and resisting arrest, and will appear at a court in the Algarve.

Up to 200 football supporters scuffled with police, who were accused by some eyewitnesses of acting in a "nervous" and "heavy-handed" manner. Mounted policemen were deployed to disperse the crowd. There were 11 injuries, including one police officer.

The Home Office said that the disorder was largely alcohol-fuelled.

There were similar incidents in Porto where hundreds of German supporters went on the rampage.
