Helpline funding set to boost support for parents
Parents will be able to get more direct help and support, when they need it, though a single telephone call, as a result of increased funding for parenting helplines, the government said today.
Children, Young People and Family Minister, Margaret Hodge, announced at the Parent Child 2004 International Conference, how funding would be distributed to five helpline services to provide general and specialist support.
Margaret Hodge said: "We are increasing funding to Parentline Plus to provide a first point of call to all parents. We are also increasing funding to specialist helplines to provide specific expert on issues such as family law, social welfare and education law. This is part of our drive to improve the universal support available to all families and increase the specialist support for families that need it.
"The helpline will set up a new database with information and contact details for a range of local services that parents need, such as where they can enrol on parenting classes or what youth services are available to their children. All the helplines will have access to the database so parents will be able to get the information they need from one call, without being passed around from helpline to helpline."
The Parent Child 2004 Conference celebrates the tenth anniversary of the United Nations' International Year of the Family. The theme of the conference is 'Family Futures: Changing Families, Changing World'.
Just over £6 million is available until March 2006 to support helplines in England. These funds are being awarded directly by the Department for Education and Skills, consisting of £4.651 million from the Parenting Fund and £1.5 million from the Family Support Grant.
Parentline Plus is a free service, available 24 hours a day on 0808 800 2222.
