England to wear black armbands in memory of murdered fan
The England team will wear black armbands in memory of murdered England fan Stephen Smith when they play Portugal in the Euro 2004 quarter-final tonight.
Stephen Smith, 28, from Wolverhampton, died after being stabbed in the chest in the early hours of Tuesday morning. He had been at a street café in Lisbon celebrating England's 4-2 win over Croatia when he was stabbed by a street robber. A Ukrainian man has been arrested in relation to the murder.
FA Chief Executive Mark Palios said: "On behalf of The FA and the England team, I would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of Stephen Smith.
"Like so many others he was here to support his team and to provide the magnificent support that we've seen here.
"His loss will be deeply felt by the England team and everybody connected with English football."
Despite the tragic backdrop to this evening's fixture, confidence is high in the England camp that they can overcome the host nation and progress into the semi-final – where either Sweden or Holland will be waiting.
England have a good record over the Portuguese – having played 20, winning nine and losing on only three occasions. The two sides last met in a friendly last February, sharing the glory with a 1-1 draw.

The 'Barmy Army' achieved an innings and 83 runs to win the fifth and final Test. Captain Andrew Strauss said: "The bowlers were fantastic and the batsmen dipped their bread in it again.

A new programme is underway to vaccinate all newborn babies against meningitis B in the UK. It is understood the scheme, which begins today 1 September, is the first of its kind in the world. Babies will be offered the MenB vaccine with other routine vaccinations at two months, four months and 12 to 13 months of age.

According to reports, the dentist has been suspended over a suspected breach of infection control standards.
