British soldier killed and two wounded in Basrah bombing
A British soldier has been killed and two others injured in a bomb attack in southern Iraq this morning.
An improvised explosive device detonated close to a British military convoy which was travelling through Basrah. The two wounded soldiers are receiving medical treatment, but the extent of their injuries is not yet clear.
The soldiers' identities have not been released as the next of kin are being informed, the MoD said.
Elsewhere, the Qatar-based Arabic news service Al Jazeera has broadcast pictures of a US Marine whom Iraqi militants claim they abducted from a US military base near Fallujah.
The blindfolded man, dressed in US military fatigues, has been identified in reports as Corporal Wassif Ali Hassoun of the First Marine Expeditionary Force. However, US authorities have not confirmed whether the Marine has been abducted.
According to Al Jazeera, the Islamic Retaliation Movement/Armed Resistance Wing claimed they captured the Marine after "infiltrating a US base".
The group has called for the release of Iraqi prisoners, threatening to behead their hostage if their demand is not met.

A British serviceman has been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The MoD said that the soldier died in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan on Monday morning. It is believed that the soldier was taking part in an attack on an insurgent base in the southern province.

The Ministry of Defence has named the Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday as 23-year-old Richard Watson. Marine Watson, of 42 Commando Royal Marines, was part of a patrol in the north of Now Zad in the north of the Helmand province that came under attack from Taliban forces.

Three British navy boats seized by Iran, reports claim
Three British navy vessels, manned by eight sailors, have been seized by Iran after entering its territorial waters, it has been reported today. An Iranian military source, quoted by Reuters, said that the boats were held and the sailors arrested after an incident in the Shatt Al Arab channel which divides Iraq and Iran.

Alex Lucas, from Peebles, in Scotland, died from his injuries following an explosion close to the treacherous Helmand province yesterday. The father of the former Peebles Rovers footballer said the news was 'heartbreaking'.
