Last-ditch talks to avert Tube strike break down
A last-ditch effort to avert the 24-hour Tube strike between London Underground (LU) and union representatives this afternoon has failed to reach agreement.
Management from LU met with representatives of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union today in a bid to stave off the one-day strike over pay that is set to begin on Tuesday evening.
Following the meeting, which lasted for less than an hour, RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said that the strike was definitely on.
London Underground said that due to the strike action from 6.30pm on Tuesday, June 29 until 6.30pm on Wednesday, June 30 Tube services would be "severely disrupted".
Transport for London (TfL) pledged to do all it could "to keep London moving throughout the strike", but advised passengers to allow extra time for their journey and, if possible, to travel outside the rush hour.
Passengers were asked to consider walking as an alternative, particularly for the short distances from national rail stations.
TfL said that there would be no additional parking in London and that the £5-a-day Congestion Charge would apply as normal from 7.00am to 6.30pm.
