Olympics inspire summer school lessons
This summer's Olympic Games in Athens will be helping summer school pupils learn about foreign languages and geography, as well as Physical Education (PE).
Olympic activities, published by the Department for Education and Skills, suggest a number of ways of using sport and the athletic theme in languages, art, food technology and PE.
Suggested lessons and activities include: adopting a language of a competing nation; devising mini 'Olympic games' as part as a PE lesson, children can also learn about 'their' country, the flag, the national anthem in other lessons; and planning the route to Athens as part of a geography lesson.
Schools Minister Stephen Twigg: "The country's energy and enthusiasm for sport during the Olympics can be channelled into summer schools and boost children's interest in so many subjects such as foreign languages, geography and PE. These activities can really help bring subjects alive."
Five Olympic Boroughs will be running summer schools using the activities. They are being published on the web for anyone to use for themed education and enjoyment.
