Talks to head off BA strike continue
Union leaders and British Airways (BA) management are holding further talks today in a bid to head off a one-day strike by baggage handlers set for the late August Bank Holiday weekend on August 27.
Yesterday, British Airways reacted to the Transport and General Workers’ Union (TGWU) ballot in favour of strike action by claiming that a strike was absurd as the offer tabled since the ballot was "substantially improved".
A BA spokesperson urged the unions to re-ballot their members on the renewed proposal: “It is an offer that matches the unions’ claim in return for a reasonable attendance record.
“We believe our staff must have the opportunity to make themselves heard fairly. It defies belief for the unions not to listen properly to their membership on this vital issue. Our customers deserve better and our staff deserve better – not to hold a ballot on such a vital issue does them all a disservice.”
BA tabled an 8.5% rise in pensionable pay over three years in line with predicted rates of inflation. This comprises a 2.5% increase backdated to October 1, 2003 followed by projected rises of 3.1% on October 1, 2004 and 2.9% on October 1, 2005.
The deal includes lump sum payments of £400 for those with no more than six days absence in two nine month periods up to the end of September 30, 2006.
However, prior to entering the talks today the GMB union urged BA to "repackage" the deal.
