Blair offers condolences following Russian air disasters
The Prime Minister has written to the Russian government offering his condolences to the families of those killed in two plane crashes yesterday evening.
It has been confirmed that 89 passengers and crew lost their lives when two aircraft crashed within minutes of each other after taking off from Moscow's Domodedovo airport. The two aircraft departed within 40 minutes of each other.
The Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has also voiced his "shock" at the twin tragedies.
The crash site of the Volvograd-bound TU-134, which took off at 9.35pm local time (5.35pm GMT), was discovered near the village of Buchalki in the Tula region. Forty-three people died in the crash which occurred shortly before 11pm local time (7pm GMT).
The Sochi-bound TU-154, which departed at 10.15pm local time (6.15pm GMT), came down near Rostov-on-Don a few minutes prior to the Volvograd flight. Forty-six passengers and crew died in the disaster.
It is not yet clear what downed the planes, but authorities have reportedly ruled out the possibility that it may be terror related.
The state security service, the FSB, has launched a probe into the incidents.
