Radcliffe to compete in 10,000m
British Olympic hopeful Paula Radcliffe, who dramatically dropped out of the marathon in a distressed state on Sunday, will compete in the 10,000 metres event this evening, it has been confirmed today.
Radcliffe, who has clocked the world's fastest time for 10,000 metres this year, will have to shake off the memories of her bitter marathon disappointment when she lines up for tonight's race at 7.50pm BST.
The 30-year-old, who is the world record holder and a firm favourite for Olympic gold, was in fourth place in the marathon when she withdrew just three miles from the finish line. The agony of leaving the race was immediately obvious to television audiences who saw Paula collapse by the roadside with her head in her hands.
At a press conference on Monday, Ms Radcliffe said that conditions – it had been 33°C at the starting line – had not been a factor. Her coaches knew what to expect and how to prepare her, she said.
The runner said that not being able to complete the course had left her "totally devastated", and she simply did not have an explanation as to why things went so drastically wrong.
