Good community relations to begin at school
Schools will play a pivotal role in the fight against racial discrimination according to Home Office guidelines published today.
The new Community Cohesion Standards for Schools have been developed by the Education Practitioner Group and seek primarily to promote community cohesion and race equality.
They provide schools with practical steps to help pupils, parents and communities work towards 'common values of citizenship and contribute to building good community relations'.
Keith Ajegbo, Chair of the Education Practitioner Group, said: "The aim of the Community Cohesion Standards for schools is to support the excellent work already developed by many schools across the country.
"It provides a baseline against which schools can evaluate their own practice and develop the confidence that their strategies are creating a community which all parents can feel has their child's best interests at heart."
