Life expectancy lowest in Scotland, says study
Scotland is home to eight out of 10 UK local authorities with the lowest male life expectancy at birth in 2001-2003, according to new figures published today.
The Office for National Statistics study found that Glasgow City had the lowest life expectancy at 69.1 years. This was the only area in the UK where life expectancy at birth was less than 70 years in 2001-2003. The local authority with the highest life expectancy for men was East Dorset at 80.1 years – 11 years more than Glasgow City.
Kensington and Chelsea has the highest life expectancy for females (84.8 years), almost eight-and-a-half years more than Glasgow City, the area with the lowest figure at 76.4 years.

Life expectancy for Scottish people has improved over the last 10 years, according to government statistics published today. The length of life expectancy at birth has increased from 72.4 years to 75.0 years for men and from 78.1 years to 79.9 years for women.
